Stony Plain Portable Signs Bylaws
These bylaws help balance effective promotion with public safety and visual harmony in Stony Plain. Regulations may evolve—it’s best to verify with the Town’s Planning & Development department before proceeding. Here are Stony Plain Portable Signs Bylaws:
- Development Permit Required
A valid development permit is mandatory before installing any portable sign. Applications must include landowner consent, a site plan, and—with highway-adjacent signs—approval from Alberta Transportation. - Definition & Allowed Quantity
A portable sign is one that is not permanently affixed to the ground or building (e.g., placed on a trailer or frame). Only one portable sign per business and one per 30 m of street frontage is allowed. - Placement & Setback Requirements
Signs must be located on private property, set back a minimum of 0.3 m within the property line, and must not encroach onto public property or adjacent sites. - Separation Between Signs
A minimum separation of 15 m is required between portable signs. - General Safety & Aesthetic Standards
Signs must not obscure traffic sightlines, be confused with official traffic signals, or use flashing or hazard-like lights. All temporary signs should include a permanent ownership tag or identifier. - Fines for Non-Compliance
Unauthorized or non-compliant sign placement may result in fines up to $250 per sign.
